US Forest Service Rappel Base

La Grande/Union County Airport, La Grande, OR

Due to the La Grande/Union County airport’s prime location to support the firefighting operations in the eastern Oregon/Washington area, Union County and the United States Forest Service worked together to construct a Rappel Base at the Airport. This project had involvement from many agencies and contractors from a Union County retained an architect to coordinate with the USFS and FAA for standards and guidelines. Precision Approach was hired to provide civil engineering services for apron improvements associated with the Rappel Base facility and the required communication and coordination with Union County, USFS, and the remaining design team to support the development of the construction bid documents for the Rappel Base facility.

Precision Approach also handled additional project elements that include drainage improvements, helipad power and water installation, and pavement marking. Cat-Ex approval required biological resources evaluation, wetland delineation, environmental site assessment, and historical and cultural resource investigation. Union County requested we team with the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) for the historical and cultural resource investigation.
